Tanks used for the storage of heating oil at private residences are PERCEIVED as a liability by the general public, insurance companies, real estate agents, lenders, and environmental advocacy groups because the tanks may leak hazardous substances into the soil and/or groundwater. Although the tanks themselves are generally unregulated by state environmental agencies, releases to the environment are. These releases are primarily caused by corrosion/overfill as well as other factors and are costly to clean up.

We realize that some of the things we think are worth considering will be controversial. However, the industry needs to become proactive in this area in order to eliminate the negative perceptions associated with heating oil storage.
